IRU Outcomes
Inpatient rehabilitation leads to:
- Better patient functional outcomes
- Improved quality of life
- Shorter length of stay
- Better discharge-to-home rates
- Lower hospital readmission rates
- Higher patient satisfaction scores
Studies show that patients treated at an inpatient rehabilitation unit, like at UPHS - Marquette, have a higher level of functional independence and are more likely to be discharged to home than those treated in other care facilities.
Therapy provided at UPHS - Marquette Inpatient Rehabilitation is under the direction of a physician trained in rehabilitation medicine and specialized nursing staff. Care plans are structured, focused, and time-sensitive to reflect the pathophysiology of recovery, avoid patient deconditioning, and maximize potential functional gain.
When patients are rehabilitated in an Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit (IRU) compared to a Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF), they have a lower risk of dying, fewer hospital readmissions, fewer emergency room (ER) visits, and more days at home than rehabilitation in an SNF for the same condition. Therefore, post-acute care settings do affect patient outcomes.
